Edward IV of England

His cousin Warwick was arranging for him to marry Bona of Savoy from France when he instead secretly wed Elizabeth Woodville. WI: Edward had actually married Bona? (Sorry if this has come up before, but I'm a big fan of this period!)

If Bona is viewed as French (it's a possibility since she's the Queen of France's sister), I think the marriage will be unpopular ala Margaret of Anjou territory. Margaret of Anjou was never loved from the beginning, because the English saw the alliance as a poor bargain. A marriage to a count's daughter instead of a Princess and a swift loss of lands English controlled lands in France. There are big similarities to the possibility of Edward marrying Bona of Savoy. Edward isn't in the strongest position (new to the throne) so a French alliance is an option to stave off problems with the French. But if he goes there, a treaty may involve him giving up lands in France or renouncing claims to lands. That's not going to go over very well with the English people (even if it satisfies Warwick).

A marriage to Bona of Savoy would have most likely prevented Edward IV from having to deal with a rebellious Earl of Warrick. In TTL, Queen Bona would not have a group at court like the Woodvilles causing Warrick to resent their influence with Edward. Bona would probably be appreciative of Warrick having arranged her marriage to Edward. Warrick and Bona could have formed a formidable alliance at court and pooled their resources to influence Edward. If Warrick was able to maintain his influence at court, I see no reason for him and Edward to fall out in TTL. Warrick would use his influence to keep England from invading France. This attitude toward the French would not be popular with the English people, but with Warrick on his side, I do not see how any rebellion could overthrow Edward in TTL. Even if the duke of Clarence rebelled in TTL, he would not resources to overthrow his brother without either Warrick or Louis XI’s help. And (in TTL) neither man is going to help Clarence overthrow a relatively peaceful Edward.

Good points here. Nearly everyone was expecting Edward to marry a princess. The marriage to Bona I'm sure would have prevented the rift between Edward and his cousin, or made it much less serious. If Edward is succeeded by a minor, I don't see Richard making his rush for power as before.

In TTL, Warrick could possibly outlive Edward IV. Warrick was only forty two years old when he died in OTL, so in this scenario I could see him living until the 1490’s. Edward IV would probably still live an unhealthy lifestyle in TTL and die around 1483.
If he marries Bona in 1464, she may have a son (TTL Edward V) as early as 1465 and that son would be eighteen in 1483, thus avoiding a need for a regency. If a regency were required in TTL, then Edward IV would probably make a will setting up a regency council with Warrick, Clarence, and Gloucester among its members. In TTL, I doubt Edward IV would allow his brothers to marry Warrick’s daughters, so it is difficult to predict what Warrick’s relationship would be with either Clarence or Gloucester. Without the Neville inheritance to fight over in TTL, Clarence and Gloucester could pool their resources in opposition to Warrick at court. I suspect that in TTL, Edward V (as heirs are prone to do) would have an opposite idea of how to rule England than his father’s (and by extension Warrick’s). Edward V would probably end the alliance with France and take part in continental wars. He would likely receive support in his warlike policies from his uncles Clarence and Gloucester. Of course, Henry VI and his son Edward may both still be alive in the 1480’s in TTL and Warrick might be in correspondence with the Lancasters.

OR rebellion from Warwick is put off and happens later because Warwick wants to control the king he made. Perhaps a disagreement over a royal marriage is averted but eventually the two are going to disagree and Warwick rebels. Perhaps Bona of Savoy brings a huge retinue (like Eleanor of Provence whose mother came from the famously social climbing house of Savoy) and Warwick throws a fit when Edward begins to award them offices and heiresses. IMO the problems with Warwick happened because Warwick could not accept that Edward was the King, and while he might be a councillor, he was still a subject.
