Edward I of Sicily; a catholic Windsor?

In 1944 Sicily thought seriously to secede from Italy.
The indipendentist movement was very strong for some year.
There were many proposal on what the indipendent Sicily
should have been.
For some Sicily had to be a brand new state of United States of America.
Others wanted a indipendent nation ( preferably a Kingdom) under the British mantle.
The debate was intense
The anglophile "party",in mid 1944, made a singural proposal:
Why not give the Kingdom of Sicily at one of most known members of the Windsor house,a international "star",a man that once was King...
The Duke of Windsor !
The thought was this:
If the Sicilian people give the Crown to the Duke, and he and the Duchess becomes catholics their can marry legitimately becouse for the Catholic Church the previous weddings of Duchess was not valid (because not Catholic).
So The Duke become King of Sicily, his wife Queen, Sicily is linked to mighty British Empire and have a Queen that is American (and the Duke and Duchess in those years were very popular in America).
Only problem Edward and Wallis had not heirs, and were a bit old for hope for.
But maybe an adoption could be tempted,if some medical attempts had failed (a similiar solution occurred for Maximilian of Mexico).

In the next months the possibility of a Sicily indipendent from Italy waned.

But what if the proposal was made?
The Duke,a former King and Emperor, would accept the Sicilian throne?
And he and Duchess would be accept to become catholics?
