Let’s say that Robert Kennedy defeats Richard Nixon in 1968, and he is able to create a “Peace with Honor” by the end of 1969, with all American troops out of Vietnam by 1970. What would be the economic impact of this? Would the evaporation of war spending lead to a better economy in the 1970s? Could stagflation be lessened and recessions weaker or altogether avoided? Would the 1970’s be seen as a time of recovery instead of a time of malaise?

The fundamental factors that caused the poor 1970s economy would still be there, and I expect the stock market still crashes in 1973. However the economic impact of the war would be less severe overall. The economy would probably remain strong through 1972, enough to give RFK the edge over Reagan, Rockefeller, or whoever challenges him that year. But by 1974 the GOP would politically benefit from the poor economy, making large gains in the House and Senate elections that year.
