*DISCLAIMER: I know this is highly unlikely and hard to pull off, but I want to try anyway*
So, Hindenburg dies of natural causes in January 1932. The centrist party and the SDP ask Eckener to run against Hitler. After initial reluctance, he agrees. Uses the Graf during the campaign. In the second round of voting, he recieves around 55% of the vote.
My first question is, who does he appoint as chancellor? Unlikely that he'd keep the guy that's currently in office, who is rather unpopular.
He'd likely crack down on the Nazi's paramilitary arm.
I could see him trying to create jobs w/ building projects, and maybe even negotiating with the allies to revise/negate sections of the Versailles Treaty.
As for a world war, Germany and the west v. the USSR around 1945/ 1950?
With a layer start to the war, some tech lags a bit slower than OTL. Airships would gain gov't support, but would probably not survive the alt-WWII, though possibly be preserved at Eckener's insistance as museums.
Any thoughts??
