Eastern Front Minus "Laurel and Hardy"

I have been reading through the discussion thread about US not entering WW1 one of the interesting points made being the combo of von Hindenburg and Ludendorff being called and I quote : " Laurel and Hardy are horrid generals"

Who would be in command of the Eastern front for the Germans if not the terrible duo of Hindenburg and Ludendorff ?

Is there some realistic good choices that could have made a big difference ?

Hindenburg had retired in 1911 and got called back to duty.

Hndenburg was pretty much of a figurehead anyway. It's only Ludendorff that you really need to replace. That could have easily happened had he been wounded at LIege. It needn't be fatal, just enough to put him in hospital for a couple of weeks, by which time someone else will have gone to East Prussia.

As to who it would be, one possibility might be Seeckt. Iirc he would play a similar role with Mackensen to that of Ludendorff with Hindenburg. Or conceivably Groener.
