East Resurgent: A Revised History of The Modern World

east_resurgent_title_card_by_spazzreflex-d46yu6q.jpg

Well, I have been examining this TL, and have found it inadequate to my taste, and how I wanted it to go. I have found faulty, contradicting, and random information in this thread, and to make this TL noticed, it must be better. Alternatively, I'm an anal-retentive insecure man who just doesn't want his work to be garbage.

/rant

Well, In simple terms, I'm redoing this TL; The POD is different and the butterflies will be flapping all over the map (but still expect Tobago to be mentioned. Can't diss half of my home).

So Title Card, Maestro!

Enjoy your trip, Sir or Madam.

Would You like a World factbook of the era?

Yes.

Thank You for your business at The Association of Chronic Argonauts.
At the current time, please step to your right and have a seat in the Red Velvet chair. Comfy?
Good.
Here at the ACA, scientists have uncovered a method of Travelling through time to experience completely new worlds. These worlds can be beautiful, and frightening at the same time.
To fully enjoy your stay in these worlds, we have compiled all the history of the world starting from the point of divergence.
In the case of [[TL#534722]] We will illustrate from a small change in one person's life, that a war was averted, and another was won, and the world changed forever.
If at anytime during this period, there is a bowl of nuts to your left, and some birch beer in a glass to your right.
Enjoy your experience.

The Issue of Spanish Succession in the late 1600s was part of the key to This Universe's Divergence. Upon the birth of horribly deformed Charles II of Spain, it became apparent that the king wouldn't have an heir, and die young. France's Bourbon Dynasty suggested Louis, Dauphin, heir apparent of France. The Hapsburg family, who had been ruling Spain at that point suggested Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. Each suggestion brought Spain into a Precariously high position in the Balance of Power; The Bourbon claims would unify the Spanish and French crown, and the Hapsburg claim would reunite the Powerful Austria and Spain.

A different claimant appeared from the small German state of Bavaria, in 1692. Joseph Ferdinand, Prince of Asturias, was also a descendant of Phillip IV of Spain, yet belonging to the House of Wittelsbach. Remember these Royal Families. They will return later in this recording.
The Powers of England and the United Provinces (Our Netherlands) had decided to support The Wittelsbach claims of Spain.

After the War of the Grand alliance, France and Britain felt weary of War, and decided to settle the issue of succession with a Treaty, the Treaty of The Hague, which would partition the Spanish Empire between The Hapsburgs and France. France would recieve Spain's Italian holdings of Naples, Sicily, and Tuscany, while Austria would get Modern Belgium.
Charles II of Spain protested this, and said Joseph Ferdinand would rule all of Spain.

Josephs' father, Maximilian II Emmanuel, Elector of Bavaria, also protested. The Hapsburgs, upset that they were excluded from the Treaty of The Hague, showed support for Maximilian's fury, should it boil into war.

Luckily, This never came to pass. Joseph Ferdinand came down with Smallpox, which in Our world killed him, and yet again left the question of dispute open, preempting the War of Spanish Succession. In this world, Joseph survives his smallpox infection, albeit left blind in his right eye.[1]

Upon Charles II's Death, Joseph Ferdinand, sporting an eyepatch, ascended upon the Spanish Throne. An Alternate Treaty of London allotted Austria the Sicily and Naples, and France won Parma and Tuscany, balancing each other in the region. Spain kept The Spanish Netherlands in order to keep French interests in the region at bay.[2]

Track 2: The War of Swedish Supremacy...

______________

1. Common ailment for smallpox survivors.

2. The French sought dominance in Italy IOTL, as well as wanting to recieve the Netherlands. Of course, Spain sought to keep something, and a good agricultural region, between Allies, and a port to Central European waters.

Comment, respond, or something. I would like some kind of feedback with this TL.

A different POD this time? I wonder if Joseph Ferdinand's regnal name would be either Joseph I or Ferdinand VI.

Either way, this should be cool. :D

Yes, as from 1706 on, Poltava or a similar battle was going to be the final nail in Sweden's Coffin.

Plus I wanted to add a framing device. I hate having to Retcon comics, let alone TLs, so I start over.

Track 2: The Swedish War of Supremacy

The War of Swedish Supremacy, known as the Great Northern War in our world, was an attempt to upsurp Swedish domination of the Baltic. After the Thirty years War, Sweden became a One time superpower, controlling most of the Baltic, as you may see in the diagram appearing on the screen below;

In 1697, Charles XII succeeded his father at the age of 16. Denmark-Norway, Russia, and Poland-Lithuania-Saxony decided that this was the time to strike. Denmark began leveling fortresses in Sweden's ally, Hollstein-Gottorp, but in February, Sweden declared war on the Coalition in 1700. In March, The Danish laid Siege to Tønning,[1] which was
a fort in Hollstein-Gottorp, while Polish forces under Augustus II also marched into Livonia.

With a Decisive Naval Victory over Denmark bringing Swedish forces within striking distance of the capital of Copenhagen, and Pressure from Great Britain and The United Provinces forced the Treaty of Travendal to be made. The Treaty of Travendal ensured the end to Denmark's involvement in the War.

After the Peace of Travendal, Sweden turned to Poland and Russia. However, the Coalition was faultering on three legs. Augustus II, though, had made little progress. He had failed to take the port of Riga, and had not swayed local nobles. Tsar Peter was caught up in another war with the Ottoman Empire, and could not deploy his force effectively until August.

The Russians laid siege to Narva in October 1700. A small force of highly trained Swedes kept Peter at bay until help arrived in November. Assisted by the Dutch Navy and Royal British Navy, Charles XII arrived in Narva in November. Under the cover of a blizzard, The Swedish forces overran the Russian positions, dividing and conquering. Winning Russia's muskets, cannons, and military supplies, Sweden pushed Peter's Army through Swedish Ingria and into Russia. Without the ability to launch an offensive against the Swedes, Peter attempted Scorched Earth tactics to dismay Charle's Army. However, the supply road to Talinn was relatively open and Charles XII was making head way through the Towns of Novogorod, Borovichi, and Torzhok. Peter wagered that Charles would go to the peace table now.

Augustus, facing unruly natives and shocked at the Swedish invasion of Russia, also forfeited to the Carolus Rex[2]. So ended the War of Swedish Supremacy with the Treaty of Talinn.
The Treaty stipulated a more autonomous Duchy of Courland, as a buffer between Pol-Liet and Sweden, and called for a neutering of the Russian Army.

The timeline so far is pretty interesting, but I do have one nitpick. The Latin for King Charles would be Carolus Rex. Karlus would just look awful and AFAIK was not used by Charles XII. Also, I'm not sure a name, even if it were in Latin, would have a definite article before it. This isn't Greek you know!

The Tuscarora and Ochese War[1]

Southern British America experienced a peaceful late 17th century, in contrast to the Anglo-Amerindian Wars occurring in every other colony. This peace came to a dramatic conclusion when South Tuscarora Chief Hancock felt European encroachment had gone too far. Targeting Roanoke River settlements, Hancock's Southern Tuscarora warriors, along with other regional tribes, had killed several hundred settlers. Carolinean colonel John Barnwell enlisted colonists, regional natives, and Northern Tuscarora Chief Tom Blount to route the S. Tuscarorans. Two succesive defeats, and the capture of Chief Hancock forced the South Tuscarora to assimilate with Blunt's tribe.

Immediately afterward, Indian soldiers whom had served the colonists and Hancock had seen British weakpoints. Few acted upon it, until the Ochese Muscogee began plans of an uprising. Yamasee delegates convened in Pocotaligo to meet with the South Carolinian government to work an agreement to control the Muscogee.

Among the South Carolinian representatives were Samuel Warner and William Bray, sent by the Board of Commissioners, Thomas Nairne and John Wright, specializing in Indian trade, and Colonial governor Edward Hyde [2]. Their meeting quickly became an attempt to redress Yamasee grievances. Their meeting extended into the night, and they decided to sleep on the issue. The Yamasee delegates squabbled outside the courthouse upon whether to declare war or not. The cooler heads prevailed.

The Ochese Creek [3] met with Yamasee and S. Carolinians to discuss the demands of the Creeks. That night, when the delegates slept, the Ochese assaulted and killed the South Carolinians. Ochese, Waxhaw, and Santee mobilized, The Yamasee remained neutral, and the Cherokee, longstanding enemies of the Muscogee, fought alongside the Colonists. Ochese forces went pillaging Pocotaligo and Port Royal, but before they could reach Charles Town, The Colonists scrounged up a militia which forced the Ochese into a Cherokee trap.

Peace returned to South Carolina, with Yamasee now dominating Trade with the English in the Carolinas region.

[Playing 'Recording by Berzelius Windrip[1]:On History']

Mr. Windrip: ...Often times, We shall find ourselves looking back at history, and wondering, 'What the hell was going through their mind' or 'How the Hell this came about'. In particular, we ponder the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire, and it's dragging of Europe through the mud alongside it. [2]
With the 1st Crisis of Moscow and 1st Germanic War [3] and subsequent land gains from there on out being favorable wars for Sweden, resulting in a windfall for the empire. The Livonian capitol of Riga was larger than even Stockholm. Behind this growth was a military, small in manpower, but efficient, and quick paced. Small arms training and fast marches proved decisive factors in the Germanic Wars and Moscow Crisis’s.
Under Charles the XII, the Swedish Empire would see its Golden Age, and destructive fall. One of the longest reigning monarchs in Europe, his some fifty year reign saw certain triumphs, such as the War of Swedish Supremacy and 2nd crisis of Moscow. His participation in the War of Polish Succession won him an obedient ally in the South and East and gave Poland an army to match Russia’s. His domination of the Baltic set the stage for his kingdom’s collapse in the 1760s, along with several other regimes…
…Alas, we may not shed a tear for dead empires. Their time in the Sun was well spent, and they themselves have caused many a death. Shakespeare once said ‘All the World is a Stage’; Giguere’s J' suis L'Etat laid this scenario as a complex, twisting, and emotionally riveting plot; The Key Army and later the Formicists used this as an excuse for Violent crimes [4]. These ideas of political evolution and static chaos have left those who want to unite the World in the dust. Goldbergian thinkers [5] have identified World unity as possible, if Liberal ideas (*under his breath* yes, even the ones which inspired the Key Army), are accepted. Most Statikists [6] doubt the idea of world unity, instead opting for ‘Spheres of Commonality’ working together to find compromise. And with our final explanation of the political differences that split this world, I bring this record to a close.

This was Buzz Windrip: On History.
