East African Federation created during the 1950s

Say Kenya,Uganda, and Tanzania are united into a federation around the same time as the Central African Federation in 1953

Would a East African Federation remain together or break-apart

Would it remain democratic and what would its cold war alignment be

What would be the impact on East Africa

Tanganyika and/or Zanzibar. There is no Tanzania until '64.

How is this union occurring? Are the British creating it? If so, is it independent 10 years earlier than OTL, or does the union exist under British overlordship for another decade? Is it the product of some rebellion?

Kenya is going to be dragged into some nasty stuff (Amin is not going anywhere). I expect a civil war at some point.

I dunno; would it be more or less viable, more or less stable, as a unified nation than the parallel West Indies Federation?

Economically each region would benefit from closer trade, which has been lacking in between most African states.
Politically it may use a similar model to the Central African Federation.
I can imagine that regionalism may be a problem between the many state but I think it should still hold considering that nearly all of these states are extremely diverse anyway, so think of modern Nigeria. Will be intersting to sew how Jomo Kenyatta anf Nyere get along, I can't see them seeing eye to eye in most cases

Amin was too big a personality to just vanish because of a fragile union. People kept underestimating him which is exactly why he succeeded.
In 1953 Amin is nothing more than an army Sergeant. At best he gets promoted to Lieuteant after independence . He was able to get as far as he did as he was 1 of only two Ugandans to be a commisioned officier. Doubt he will have room to get as far as he did, especially when you already have huge personalities such Neyere and Jomo Kenayatta around

You could say that about an Austrian corporal, a Corsican artilleryman, a failed French Colonel, even a Georgian bank robber. Amin came from nothing but his drive, his aggression, his determination and yes luck led him to power. Overlooking someone based on humble origins is how they surprise you by undermining you. Africa is full of strong personalities and the educated were always viewed with dubious respect by the masses, schooled as they were by their former overlords. Leadership is giving your people what they want whether for good or ill. History has a sense of humor.

I believe that For All Time had an East African Federation forming in the ‘50s. IIRC, Idi Amin was usurped as leader of this ATL country in 1964 by Milton Obote, who courted strong relations with a PRC led by Lin Biao.

Simply put, Amin wouldn't have the same sway in this East African. When he comes under the mircoscope of whoever is in charge, he won't be able to initate a coup. Also this nation would likely be less anti-west as Obete's Uganda, and therefore even IF Amin could put together a (far weaker) coup, he likely wouldn't have Western support. For these reason Amin will probably end up getting fired from what posistion he manages to secure, and they get himself thrown in prision/shot for whatever stunt he pulls to retatlate for his firing

Maybe without politics he could focus his energy on his rugby career, apparently he was a good player.

"His Excellency Rugby President for Life, Field Captain Alhaji Dr. Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBRT"

Apparently with one small historical change Idi Amin goes from the most vicious dictator of the 70's to the most vicious rugby player of the 70's.
