some of you may remember a thread that i made for the aztec empire in my ASB ATL. well, ive been re-writing it a bit lately, trying to add some more detail, and im trying to come up with a more detailed history for the aztec empire of this world following its reinstatement in 1848. here's a rough description of events leading up to this:

  • 1521: Cortez returns to Tenochtitlan after La Noche Triste, but the Aztecs have fled the city (this means that they have been more or less defeated, but are still alive and stage a resistance)
  • 1522: the Aztecs return in force to fight the Spanish in a resistance movement; they are led by Cuauhtemoc
  • 1526: first Spanish attempts to conquer the Yucatan
  • 1527: Gonzalo Guerrero joins the resistance, which inspires the Mayans to join as well
  • 1529: Nuno Beltran de Guzman enters La Gran Chichimeca and is ultimately responsible for the Chichimeca joining the resistance movement
  • 1535: the Mixton Rebellion takes place, but is a failure (goading from the main resistance forces, the Mayaztec Alliance, results in the Chichimeca and other nomadic natives to rebel five years earlier than IOTL)
  • 1537: Cortez goes to finish what Guzman started, but is killed in battle (IOTL, he died of natural causes in 1547)
  • 1540s-50s: Cuauhtemoc and Guerrero die, and the resistance movement splinters into many smaller groups
  • 1808: a resistance group kills the viceroy of New Spain, resulting in the colonial government cracking down on natives and mestizos
  • 1810: Catholics of native descent rise up under Miguel Hidalgo (he keeps his OTL name because i imagine that the tradition of baptizing natives with spanish names would persist; and yes, there is a sizable catholic following in the aztec empire ITTL)
  • 1821: New Spain is placed under martial law (the mexican war of independence doesnt happen ITTL because the resistance movements arent unified enough, so New Spain as a country persists for a while longer)
  • 1846-48: First Spanish-American War (OTL Mexican-American War) results in much of northern New Spain being annexed by the United States and the Aztec Empire is reinstated as an independent monarchy (but not a puppet state)
this is about how far ive gotten in rewriting the history of the aztec empire. some events that i want to cover from this point to 1900 are:

  • the Reform War (if mexico is already a monarchy, would such a war even occur?)
  • possible ACW involvement (would the aztecs intervene on behalf of either side in the civil war, or stay out of it?)
  • the European invasion that installed Maximilian I of Austria as emperor of mexico (this happens around the same time as the ACW) and the subsequent assassination of Max1st by juarez
  • Porfirio Diaz (or an equivalent) possibly as a prime minister (since there's no presidential office for aztlan ITTL)
  • possible presence of Emiliano Zapata (or an equivalent)
if anything is unclear, just ask ;)
