Early colonial collapse

Penny for your thoughts...

As its history would be so much more interesting, in the Chinese sense at least, were it to retain all those troublesome religious fanatics who began immigrating in the early seventeenth century, what's the best way to significantly delay English colonization of North America, while minimizing butterflies elsewhere? A particularly buxom native prostitute with a nasty case of syphilis entertaining the Jamestown colonists? Or perhaps a nasty hurricane? Would the failure of Virginia be enough to slow or prevent entirely the Great Migration?

Time-line may follow, if there is any interest.

Well if the Jamestown settlers were slaughtered by natives and their heads placed on the spikes at the shores, the next batch of Europeans might stay long enough to forage food and leave, bringing back stories of demons and such.

This could spark some sort of religious crusader colony that wishes to cleanse the earthly hell.

I'm not sure if it's possible to significantly delay English colonization without causing butterflies. Keep in mind the French, Dutch, and Spanish had their eyes on North America, too, and minimizing English impact would lead to a patchwork of colonies in North America, my guess being an English/British Canada, a Dutch Atlantic coast, a French Interior, and a Spanish West Coast. This means no United States as we know it today and innumerable butterflies.

That would make a cool novel, or movie.

I should clarify, perhaps. By minimizing butterflies, I mean in the short term, and with regard to the situation in England at the time. In other words, I would rather avoid having the early English settlements stomped out by aggression from another European power (which might lead to a butterfly breeding continental conflict). The goal is to keep the 20k some odd Puritans who took part in the Great Migration from doing so (e.g. John Winthrop hooking up with Cromwell and becoming a military figure, rather than setting up the Massachusetts Bay Colony).
