Earliest Woman President

Don't forget Eleanore Roosevelt was in the same time as Eva Peron. Who would have thought a woman would've been so close to the Presidency in the largely Catholic and conservative Argentina of the first half of the 20th century?

I believe if the situation is right, Eleanore Roosevelt could easily be a widow-ruler: An all too common figure to succeed infamous husbands.

*Especially if India and Israel could do it only a decade later...

Eva Peron was never president of Argentina. She was close but only because it was politically convenient for her husband. She was vice-president on the sufferance of her husband, that says alot about womens roles in the 50's, she had no real power. I believe Eleanor Roosevelt was in much the same position. Progressive, loved by a large section of the people, however, kept away from real power and unable to translate that popularity to the ballot box.

Argentina did not have a female president until Isabella Peron, a puppet, who followed her husband into the presidency in 1974, a good 20 years after the death of Evita. 1974, which is pretty much when women started moving into executive political roles around the world.
