Since people called Jefferson an atheist and he still won, I'd say an atheist could have got elected quite early (if a Jefferson or Washington had become atheist).

....African American (so earlier that Obama)?
....Asian American?
....Native American?
....a practicing Jew?
....a practicing Muslim?
....a practicing Buddhist?
....a practicing (is that the right term?) Atheist?
....openly gay?
....openly lesbian?

These could either be OTL, or in an ALT (so, in other words, what would it take to get one of these types into office before present day).

1976, 1980, 1992, 2020, 1988, 1948, 2000, and 1996, in that order.

....African American (so earlier that Obama)?

Colin Powell in the 90s. A generic (i.e. not extremist like Jesse Jackson) black man probably became electable in the mid 80s.

....Asian American?

Probably the 60s (a Japanese-American might have trouble a little longer, for obvious reasons). Main obstacle is that I can't think of many prominent Asian-American politicians outside of Hawaii.

....Native American?

Hoover dies in office.

....a practicing Jew?

1950s.

....a practicing Muslim?

Early 1800s, one of Jefferson's eccentric phases.

....a practicing Buddhist?

See above.

....a practicing (is that the right term?) Atheist?

IRL the first several presidents (Deist was pretty much the "respectable" version of atheist).

....openly lesbian?

2020s.

....openly gay?

2040s.
