This thread is inspired by again watching the Hist Channel today, which for ANZAC Day next wk has advertised a few new docos on the Victoria Cross and the men who've won it. Now, given that prior to 1856, there was no official medal or systematic way to recognise an individual enslited soldier's bravery, WI there'd been an earlier version of the Victoria Cross for that purpose- say dating back to the Napoleonic Wars or even the ARW ?
