Earlier US nukes?

I'd agree that before 1944 is impossibly without a massive PoD, even having nuclear weapons available in 1944 or just earlier in 1945 can make a big difference if it results in Germany being nuked.

One possible change that comes to mind; if nuclear weapons are used on Germany might we end up not seeing them used against Japan? Also, if nukes become the weapon that took down the Nazis the anti-nuclear movement might be weaker as a result.

Nothing like busting a nuke on the Nazis to make nuke socially acceptable

in any scenario that United States get a bomb first, they would use a nuclear bomb against one of their enemies as a show of power to the rest (antagonistic) powers that remained .

Well, the Nazis are still seen as evil incarnate within popular culture, while Japan's reputation has been largely rehabilitated in the Western world.
because the atrocities commited by the Japanese are directly related to their people.. not to a single political entity that no longer exists in an official status. The Nazi's were not in the same boat as the japanese, though they salied alongside one another. and nobody fucking remembers the Italians atrocities.

Probably because the Italians were so incompetent and mostly switched sides in 1943.

So some time in the second half of 1944 a German City is nuked, does it change anything. I do not think Hitler surrenders. Berlin is nuked and Hitler is dead, how can Germany surrender with no government?

Hitler would have fought on.

(I wonder whether there would have been any effect on Japan, also whether there was any tactical use for such a bomb)

If the US demonstrates the ability to vaporize an entire german city in an instant Georing himself may very well be willing to put a gun to hitlers head to get a surrender going. Once the atomic genie is out of the bottle it goes beyond simple ideology and stubbornness and moves into self preservation.

If its ready before D-day I can see it being used not on a German city but on the beaches of Normandy as a way to clear out the defenders just before the landing craft go in. Remember, we didn't know about fallout and other effects at the time and there WERE plans to use nukes in such a manner when invading Japan
