LtCdr Taylor did his thesis on Ski Jumps in 1974, which led to their incorporation on Hermes and Invincible in 1980. Both the USN and USAF did ski jump trials in the early 80s which were very successful, and thought to be a solution for Soviet runway denail operations. But I think the Cold War wound down before anything was implemented and nobody has threatened runway denail since.

So how do we get ski jumps as standard features on military bases around the world? Could the Soviets take it up after the 6 Day War? Or if the US had attacked airbases in Vietnam maybe they would have taken some steps?
