I just finished reading Tom Clancys Sum of all Fears. During a part when Jack Ryan is critiquing newbie Ben Goodley, Jack brings up the Cuban Missile Crisis and Kruschev.
Historically we know in 1958 Kruschev started making reforms to the Party and wanted to ^change the system^, Ryan goes on to say: Kennedy received word from certain intel people that if he gave the Soviets some leeway relationship could improve and reaproachment could have happened 30 years sooner. However JFK for political reasons decided not to give Kruschev the space, and that for this the sixties could have been a big mistake.

What if Kennedy takes the information seriously and decides to extend an olive-branch?
