earlier "modern" Olympics

How early would have been possible? 1850's? Or even the age of enlightenment?

That´s the question. Maybe even the hight of Renaissance, with butterflying Savonarola and certain developements could lead to an implementation of the games in Italy with the Pope´s approval ? Maybe even the king of France could become some prestigeous protege and Italian cities particpating in the Olympic Games- in the tradition of ancient times. With Ottoman conquest, Athen would become unavailable for the games, so Rome might be suitable ?

Would it be possible to make the ancient olympic games survive in the Byzantine empire all the way to the Ottoman conquest in the 15th century?

If there is a less hard crackdown on pagan traditions and the Olympic Games are continued in Greece somehow . Old Polis structures survived rather long in Greece and pagan remote areas existed until 10th century or so. Olympic Games under Byzantine flag like the Hippodrome chariot races would be interesting.
