Earlier invention of the 'Diesel' engine

In OTL, Dr. Rudolph Diesel invented the engine that is named for him around 1893. But, suppose he didn't invent it, because someone else already had.

How much earlier could such a device (which wouldn't have been called 'Diesel', of course) have been invented?

How would this have changed the world?

I can't see it much earlier, as a lot of the ICE development was dependent on advances in Metallurgy.
Without the proper spring steel for the Piston Rings, and High temperature Steel for the Piston Heads, and Bearing metal for the Bearings, The Engines would tear itself apart or freeze up almost as soon as it started.

That said, Maybe a Decade sooner, Concurrent with the first Spark plug Engines.

Early Diesels were better in a marine environment, so maybe they would be more associated with that use.
