'Eagle Claw' vs 'Neptune Spear'

No one except for the US and Soviet military forces in that era had sufficient long range aircraft, particularly helicopters, to pull it off..

It wasn't the fault of the ground troops in 1979. It was the aviation element of the plan that was fatally flawed, and the weather was a big factor in that

Not even them, obviously, otherwise there's no need for Desert One/Two.

Yep.

Hmmm looks like its another case of go big or go home

Looks to me like they should have inserted from Turkey or Iraq? or from a CBG in the Gulf

Im talking about a Helicopter Brigade sized insertion with all the trimmings

Take an Airport while the ninjas with a ranger Battalion in support are grabbing the hostages - Transport Aircraft land while this is happening.

Lots of Air cover and explosions where the Iranians park their planes (F4s and F14s!!!) - everything folds back the way it came and everyone is home in time for Breakfast.

What could possibly go wrong?

Now, on the technical side.

If we try to fast-forward to today's environment, and try to utilise the technology we have right now in a similar rescue situation, could it have been pulled off?

IMHO, yes, it could. With KC-130 and V-22 as main elements, it could deliver US forces in Tehran and maybe pull them back. About rescue mission, I don't know, too many factors involved there.
