Ah, yes, the real Jack D. Ripper...

Does he help trigger a Second Civil War as well by showing up with an armed force at the Ole Miss desegregation? Because that would be in keeping.

Chapter One, Part One

"I accept your resignation."

Those four simple typewritten words, followed by a handwritten signature, and the date (August 4th, 1959) officially ended the military career of two-star U.S. Army Major General, Edwin Walker.

News of this was leaked to the journalistic press in due time. President Dwight Eisenhower attended a press conference, where he confirmed this. Walker, on the other hand, was not available for comment.

That is, until the 10th of August.

On that Monday, Walker hosted members of every major newspaper in his home. Still in uniform, he made his intentions for the future quite clear:

"I will be seeking the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the election of 1960."

This naturally sent shock-waves through the political world, but none of the other declared candidates refused to accept him as a threat. Vice President Richard Nixon, speaking to his wife Pat, said that "the fucker can run, all right, but he ain't gonna get a piece of me."

How wrong they were.
