DWI: A second front in 1944

Comrades I’d like to hear your thoughts on just how events during the later years of the Great Patriotic War would’ve played out, had the Anglo-American leadership kept it’s promise to open up a serious second front against Nazi Germany in 1944.

I understand there was a plan named Operation Overlord, calling for a cross-channel invasion of France but this was scrapped in favour of other operations in Italy and elsewhere.

If Operation Overlord were to succeed which is a big if due to the massive issues in sending an entire army over the Channel on the heavily defended beaches we might see more NATO members on mainland Europe due to Russia not curbstomping Germany and "liberating" Western Europe.

Oh by Lenins beard, not the unmentionable sea-peer again?!

It's nice to have you on this site comrade but you must learn to use the search function which the proletariat under the wisdom of Comrade Ian provided for us, this scenario has been done again and again.

To quickly sum up: Only the Glorious Workers and Peasants Red Army could ever defeat the fascist beast. The best the former capitalist powers of America and Britain could hope to do was carve out small victories in side shows like North Africa, Italy or the tragic invasion of Honshu and Kyshu. If they ever embarked on a large land campaign like Overlord they would have been facing the German army not Mussolini's bumbling saps and would face being driven into the sea immediately.

Really? Well I see no recent mention of this ''Sea-Peer'' you speak of and have no desire to be accused of thread-necromancy Comrade.:p

As for ''Glorious Comrade Stalin liberateing all of Earth from global capitalist slavery''...Um why do Neo-Stalinist crazies post such odd things all the time?

Now back to the subject of the war. I doubt Germany would've lasted until 1946 if a more vigorous effort had been made by the Anglo-Americans. Fighting in the Alpine front was vicious and bloody, this could’ve been avoided with a Normandy landing from what I gather the German troops there either second rate occupation troops or remnants of units that had been badly mauled on the Eastern Front. American airpower was overwhelming.

The landings in Norway were a poor use of resources, and it was bloody sideshow, althrough granted not a total farce like the earlier British attempt.

OOC: You're probably playing along, but IRL I'm not a Stalinist.

IC: Ja, all of Europe would not be under glorious contol of Comrade Stalin. From there, he would not have strength to take all of world, ja. Nyet, he never would have crushed capitalism.

OOC: I don't think you are playing along. Remember that this is an alternate universe where the Second Front NEVER went ahead.

IC: There was no way the Allies could have regained air superiority over France after the introduction of the Nazi jet fighters. Although they had numerical superiority, they were too weak hearted and got scared when just two squadrons of them jumped a very large bomber formation bound to Berlin. Of these, only a mere twenty made it back to tell the harrowuing tale. The fighter escort the Allies threw in were simply no match. This caused the British Bomber Command to cancel all sorties into Europe, allowing the Nazis to regain their strength.

"But comrade, how then did the glorious Soviet Union triumph over the Nazi jet fighters?" you may ask. Well, the answer obviously lies in their numerical superiority and our indomitable will. We pressed on even though we suffered many losses. These losses were necessary in banishing the evil of Fascism. The courage of these men who lost their lives fighting to advance the cause of communism will never be forgotten. Also, a defector from the Luftwaffe flew in an intact model, alowing the Soviets to reverse engineer the thing and come up with their own jet fighter model.

The decadent Allies were also deterred from opening up the Second Front because of the existence of an entire Panzerarmee at Calais. This Panzerarmee consisted of many top notch units. If the Allies had carried on with the proposed unmentionable sea peer, they would have been rolled back into the sea by this Panzerarmee. The Allies had no credible air cover with which to delay the movement of the Panzerarmee into Normandy and whatever small beach head at Normandy would be obliterated.
