As you all well know, in 2008, Governor Reginald "Reggie" Fils-Aime of New York was elected President. The former Namco exec-turned Governor is largely credited with the modernization of America's digital infrstructure and the incorporation of the internet into nearly all aspects of daily life. Thanks to him, every single American has low-cost access to fiber-optic internet, we can almost physically be with loved ones on the other side of the country due to developments in Augmented Reality, and businesses know exacxtly what you need at any given moment thanks to personal data aggregation. On top of that, America is now one of the most high-tech countries in the world, rivaling Japan and South Korea and securing our economic dominance for years to come.
Of course, there are some who see the convenience, progress, and efficiency that has arisen as a result of the Reggiedent's investments into internet technologies as a bad thing. Labor unions are angered at the (more or less) government-subsidized automation that's taking away their jobs. Certain political factions see the rise of "Big Data" as a massive intrusion into our privacy and a violation of civil rights.
So what would happen if Fils-Aime never became President? We likely wouldn't have had a black or Caribbean-American president yet, and who knows what would happen to the country technologically.
EDIT: I mean DBWI :/
