Dutch/Japanese War?

Ok, this isn't a question about WWII; well at least not really.

I was just wondering (because the second world war is in no way my specialty) if there were no second world war and japan kept seeking new territories once they decide to invade Indonesia, how would the dutch fair in a one on one war with the Japanese?

I was just wondering because I know the Japanese weren't all that powerful during WWII, but I know the dutch had been in decline for 100 years.

First, the Japanese had the third strongest navy in the world prior to WW2(some would say the second). Their army also was strong, though tied up in China. However, the UK and other powers would be very unhappy if the Japanese attacked. If this occurred prior to the war against China, then Japan will occupy the DEI rapidly, before being forced off by US/UK forces.

The Royal Netherlands Navy knew it could not hold the Dutch East indies by them self but they were building in 1938-1940 a nice little fleet to help an allied in a war against Japan . As you can see at this site .http://www.warshipsww2.eu/typy.php?language=E&period=&stat=HOL
