Drowning Boris

In 1990 Boris Yeltsin fell off a bridge and into the Moscow River. He claimed it was an assassination attempt. Most people believed he had simply been drunk. His bodyguard later said it was a suicide attempt. Whichever the case, WI the incident had resulted in his death?

Well August Putch next year might have a chance in succeeding.... With Yeltsin dead hardliners would have had the upper hand...

Its a true shame that Yeltsin the President was a much weaker man morally than the Yeltsin that stood up against the plotters.

I think the putsch was doomed with or without Yeltsin to oppose it. Obviously butterflies could lead to it being successful, but they could just as well lead to it not occurring or falling apart just as it was getting off the ground.

If the putsch is still attempted unsuccessfully then Gorbachev's plan to reform the Soviet Union will fail as in OTL, but without Yeltsin's Russia First attitude I don't know what the alternative could be. If the putsch is butterflied away then the plan has good odds of being implemented... at least for a few months.

Well if hardliners fail in their coup i see some moderate members of USSR Communist party rise up something between hardliners and Gorbachev's "socialdemocrats" but they will struggle to keep both sides happy...
