I've seen numerous threads proposing replacing one variety of (usually single-row) radial with another (usually larger diameter or different maker). I've never quite understood why engine makers didn't simply "double" an existing single-row to two- or four-row.

From what I've seen, the "doubling" of liquid-cooled V engines (V12 to X24, frex) isn't as simple as it looks. So, what issues affect the success or failure of "doubling" a radial? (Presuming every dimension of the original is retained, & only a "longer driveshaft" or something plus more {otherwise identical} cylinders...)
