Double WI. Bounaparte Returns From Egypt?

Was ploughing though a history of the French revolutionary war era & found a remark about how the commander of the French expedition the Egypt, a General Bounaparte, was selected to head the force as the senior government leaders considered him a rival and danger to the Republic. Gen Bounaparte died in Egypt of a infected wound. Supose he had survived the campaign an returned to France? Was he actuall a contender as a leader of a goverment in the Republic & how long might he have survived in that capacity?

In that era, anyone could really have been a "danger to the Republic". As far as I know he had lost most of his popularity among his own troops after the Egyptian Campaign got literally nothing done, but a relatively young officer could do plenty in France at the time.

Honestly I'd think too little is known about him to really say what he would do.

Let's be real: when he died in OTL, most of his troops were also plagued by illness, the whole campaign was an utter failure, and he was in fact trying to flee back to France, leaving his army behind. Hardly the actions of a true leader! I'm sure it's true that the period was a time of opportunity for capable young officers, but Bounaparte was no Dumas or Masséna, for sure. (In fact, the guy was a bit of a nobody, to the extent that people don't even agree on how his name should be written. It's usually rendered 'Bounaparte' now, but he was born "Buonaparte" and seems to have favoured "Bonaparte" himself.)

Even if this guy got back to France, he would have faced severe sanctions for abandoning his army.
