Double Death, Nov. 8, 1960

On election eve, WI LBJ had been assassinated in the so called "Adolphus Riot", and JFK and Jackie had been assassinated by the Palm Beach suicide bomber? How would the constitutional crisis resolve itself? Would Ike's term be extended and another election organized, Rayburn become President, or Nixon is elected, if only to spare the country from this unprecedented crisis/tragedy?

Had Johnson been murdered in November 1960 I think that Kennedy and the Democrat national committee would have chosen a new VP candidate, probablhy a moderate to progressive Southerner.

Had John Kennedy been murdered that person (and I am not sure who the candidates would be) would be treated as President elect. I think a new VP would be chosen by Democrats before electors vote.

The Presidency would look less legitimate but on the other hand the sympathy for Democrats would be huge.

In this case they would be simultaneously murdered, within a few hours on the same day. Therefore creating an unprecedented constitutional crisis.

I'm pretty sure the electors would be free to vote for whomever they choose in that situation. The law regarding electors differs from state to state, so each state could potentially vote in a different way. This would probably result in the election being thrown into the House.

It is also possible that the DNC could choose to nominate replacements for Kennedy and Johnson (possibly a ticket of Hubert Humphrey and Adlai Stevenson, or perhaps Bobby Kennedy, who would turn 35 before the Electoral College voted). The electors would not be pledged to vote for this ticket, but they probably would.
