The government reshuffle in London has provided a surprise for local affairs with the news that the Prime Minister Mr Callaghan had appointed two joint secretaries for Northern Ireland.
The Leeds MP Mr Merlyn Rees has been appointed Political Secretary with emphasis on finding a settlement for the province.
The new role of Security and Justice Secretary for Northern Ireland has been given to the Barnsley MP Mr Roy Mason with emphasis on dealing with the street level violence
