Donald Trump Runs for President in 1988

As far back as 1988, people wanted Business Magnate Donald Trump to run for president, but he had declined to. What if he had run for president in 1988 against Vice President George H.W. Bush, Senator Bob Dole, and Media Mogul Pat Robertson? If he wins the nomination, can he beat Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis in the General Election?

I'm not sure how different Trump would have been back then, but I think that today, a lot of his popularity derives from the rise of the alt-right that, while not a huge force in itself, probably helped popularize Trump a lot on the Internet. (And also general anti-social justice sentiment that arose as a reaction to the rise of third wave feminism and the queer movement.) He is a product of the 21st century, not the 20th. I'm not sure he'd have been very competitive with a campaign like the one he's running today.

Of course he would, Trump force isn't on his ideology (because his ideology is pretty much money) but with his propaganda, he was a democrat for his whole life before turning republican, at the end if he ran in 1988 he would just pick any topic of that era (like the collapse of the eastern bloc) and push it in his favour

1988 is before The Apprentice (and other assorted japes) turned him into a complete joke. He'd run a very pedestrian Perot-type campaign, and wouldn't cause much of a stir.

However much an act it really is, Trump's 2016 bid of OTL would not even survive the political standards of the late-'80s / Clintonite '90s, which is a pretty scary thing to mull over.
