Does anyone have a map of Sweden before unification?

That's most likely because no one's really sure what they all looked like beyond knowing they controlled certain areas, heck their is'nt even an agreed upon date upon which Sweden came into existence.

The original Iron Age petty kingdoms aren't entirely coterminous with the later lands on the maps preceding this; these are mediaeval subdivisions partly based on those old kingdoms. No maps exist of the original petty kingdoms because they're impossible to map. Swedish society at this point was dominated by tribalism, and allegiance to a specific petty ruler was based not on territory, but on family links.

Surely an estimated map can be done, even with fuzzy borders? I've found similar ones for Norway. Is there even a list of petty kingdoms somewhere? I'm interested in 1000-1300.

Is there anything that exists about powerful vassals in the early united Kingdom?

He or she meant that Uppland could have had the power to unify Sweden.

Yes.
The areas of svear, around lake Mälaren, and Uppland as the strongest was one faktor in the unification process.
Götar, divided in on East and one West, was the two outher powers.
But they was not organize in king and serfs moor like a maffia. He how has best relations whit strong groups hade most power. If he did something wrong, he lost his power.
Some say that it was Götar that forced a unification. Some say it was Svear. Some say it was the church. A few say it was Germans that financed it too counter a strong Danish state.
I don't believe that the smal 'stats' is importen in thé process.
