Saw the trailer for this Peter Jackson-produced film yesterday and then went to the website. Sort of an AH, in that it is based on the premise that a mothership load of insect-like aliens landed in South Africa in the 1980's and now they are living in a squalid refugee camp under the control of a multinational corporation which has gotten filthy rich and powerful by studying their technology and adopting it for commercial development. The aliens' plight has become a political issue in the 2000's when the movie appears to be set.

Movie probably is more a veiled metaphor for human exploitation and racism than AH or SF, but sounds very interesting. Trailer looks cool and suggests the film may be done in false documentary style.

If it goes along the lines of the short film that it was based on, also done by Blomkamp, then it would be a sort of mockumentary. Very interesting.

One thing I am thinking about is whether South Africa is still Apartheid, albeit in a different form? Are the same people still in charge, now focusing on anti-alien rhetoric?

EDIT: After watching the short film again, the answer is yes.

When I saw the trailer for this when I went to see X-Men Origins, I thought it would be about apartheid, but then aliens show up and that's when it hit that it might be analogous to Apartheid. Looks like a decent movie from the trailer. Let's hope Peter Jackson makes it as good as it already looks.

Strictly speaking it's Benoni (same place where Charlize Theron is from), which is about 35km east of Johannesburg. However, I work in Jo'burg, went to varsity there, and have lived there for about three years altogether over the past ten years, so I think I can claim it as my home town.

On the Multinational United website, if you go to "Present" on its homepage, the city that is pictured is Jo'burg.
