I've been looking at one or two TLs where the idea is that Hitler makes several changes after getting elected, in order to produce a better German performance in 140 and afterwards. One of the stumbling blocks such ideas tend to have*is the response of the other European nations to these German manoeuvres. So, lets imagine that Hitler tries to push the issue too far, too fast, and France et al call his bluff. The general consensus is that the Heer had a plan, which was the plan every time Hitler went up to the brink until Munich. Arrest him, take over, grovel to the western allies, and in all likelihood, ensure that Herr Hitler is shot while escaping too.
The question is, what then? What happens to Germany? What do the allies, Italy and the Soviets do?
I suppose it'll be different depending on the circumstances. The European situation if Hitler decides to go for Austria in 1934, and Mussolini actually goes toe to toe, may be very different to how things would fall out if we get France reacting to the reoccupation of the Rhineland -maybe the UK stump up the cash the French needed for mobilisation as a consequence of the PoD? Who do the Germans put in charge? Does it stay a military regime for the foreseeable future? Is there some semblance of democracy restored using the likes of the DNVP? Does the new German government attempt to rearm at all, on a slower pace, possibly with more consensus and discussion with the West? If this happens before Abyssinia and Spain, do they still go off as they did in OTL?
Basically, what are the consequences for Germany, Europe and the world if Mr Hitler accidentally falls backwards onto a knife, at some point prior to Munich, or even Anchluss? We'll assume that the general who found him was unable to save him... What happens next?
*Beyond the one that Hitler is Hitler, and a Hitler with a different enough world view to plan for a long war, or decide that the Sea Mammal actually needs to happen will be different on a fundamental level, and may never reach the Chancellor's office.
