LONDON, May 21 -- A scientific team from the British Antarctic Survey's research ship RRS Boaty McBoatface discovered what appears to be the wreck of a ship's boat from the lost Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition yesterday, it was announced.
The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, under the command of famous explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was intended to send a team of explorers across the continent. Their main ship, the RYS Endurance, departed London at the beginning of the First World War, sailed to the island of South Georgia, and left there in the local spring of that year. The ship disappeared without trace.
A subsequent expedition immediately after the war conducted by men aboard the RRS Discovery found no remnants of the expedition. Speculations briefly flourished as to their face, but lacking confirmation, they soon were forgotten.
The BAS is declining to release the whereabouts of the wreck, conserving the site for later archaeological investigation.

Pirate Jenny: Information wants to be free! The Free Pothunters have contacted us to hack the Royal Sit-on-Their-Arses Survey and uncover the location of the wreck so it can be investigated and these valuable relics sold.
Fred the Clueless: Excuse me for asking, but why 'Boaty McBoatface'?
Hotshot: A coalition of toy companies and children's shows bought the naming rights. You can buy 'Boaty McBoatface' toys in toyshops all over the country.
