"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott not murdered.

No Hellyeah. Damageplan probably would've stayed together, and Hellyeah's impetus probably would've been removed.

I'll try to think about this more...

I left this very open on purpose.

I just read an interview with Jerry Abbott. He doesn't think a Pantera reunion would happen anytime soon. There was just too much drama, and if Damageplan were to be successful, the impetus to reunite Pantera would probably evaporate.

Dimebag's girlfriend echoed the sentiments.

I guessed I'm qualified here.

Now back in the day Dave Mustaine wanted Dimebag to be his lead guitarist for Megadeth, but it wouldn't happen because he couldn't get Vinnie Paul in as the Drummer and Dimebag walked away from the deal. After a while a rivilry formed formany random reasons. After Dave's injury in 2002 he started ending his long time feuds, But Dimebag died in 2004 before Dave could talk to him. If Dimebag lives, we may see him on United Abominations, creating a very different style for sure.

In a path not involving Megadeth, a Pantera reunion is always possible.

The avoidance of his death is one of the events in one of my many timeline ideas, but it also contains a surviving Cliff Burton and some other figures.

Well, in my opinion it's probably because Damageplan was a better band. No offense to Pantera or anything, but Phil Anselmo, their lead singer, wasn't all he was cut out to be. I remember Alice in Chains did a few shows with him on vocals when they were starting to play again and it was...uh...less than stellar.

Of course, a living Cliff Burton would change the scene's dynamics so much that the results are hard to predict.

Pantera was essentially a rebirth of the Thrash movement. A surviving Cliff Burton could do all sorts of things.

Barring possibly joining Mustaine, Darrell and the rest of Pantera either do a reunion on down the road, or pull a Van Halen and all possibility of a reunion tour keeps getting dashed due to in-fighting and arguments.

If the Pantera reunion is deep-sixed, then Darrell remains with the band he was running with at the time of his unfortunate demise, and unless they managed to hit big like Pantera did, possibly stays on that route for the rest of his life.

Now if Pantera managed to come back together, then they'd probably remain (more or less) the face of their brand of heavy music.
