Different USN carrier doctrine

From reading "shattered sword" one of the majors points was that they IJN fought carriers as a carrier division something that would take awhile for the USN to figure out. So is it possible that the pre war USN develope a similiar doctrine of using carriers in pairs? How would this effect the 1942 carrier battles?

Maybe Midway ends up as less decisive because of more focusing fighters? The Japanese might lose Shokaku from extra damage, but Akagi and Hiryu might survive, plus Kaga lost with less damage.

What the hell? Shoukaku didn't even participate in the Battle of Midway because she had been battered heavily in the Battle of the Coral Sea.

I'm easily confused. The Japanese had a single ocean fleet and one major enemy, and six fleet carriers. The Americans did not.
