Different sucessor to Sun Yat-sen

Who else could have replaced Sun besides Chiang Kai-shek as the leader of the Kuomingtang? Would someone other than Chiang replacing Sun primarily benefit the Nationalists or have the opposite effect?

Probably. The rift was largely put in place by Chiang's orders to perpetrate the 1927 Shanghai Massacre, and I can't see anyone else being dumb/ruthless enough to go through with it.

If th CCP and the Kuomingtang cooperated more, would they be more able to repulse the Japanese?

You should ask the question: If the CCP didn't go around subverting everything it touched, would China have resisted the Japanese more efficiently?

What do you mean?

For the Nationalists, stopping the war to beat the Japanese was okay, for the Communists, the Civil War never really stopped, even in the face of the Second Sino-Japanese War. They were busy little bees making sure that whoever emerged at the top of the smoldering heap after the war was going to be a through-and-through communist.

If Chiang is still the leader of the NRA (but not the KMT), then no. He always wasted all his best trained and equipped troops on set piece battles that couldn't have been won.
