In 1945 Soviet tanks were the equal of any in the West, during the 50's though, with the large scale introduction of tanks like the Centurion and the M48, Western tanks began developing a qualitive lead to which Russia has never caught up to.

As some members of the board will tell you the watershed for Soviet tank design was the T-64. This was a clean break with everything that went before, it introduced the 125mm smoothbore gun that remains current upto the present day, it also introduced the autoloader that remains current.

What if instead of going for smaller tanks with a three man crew the Soviets followed a more Western path, building fewer tanks but with heavier protection and more powerful engines and retaining the four man crew of commander, gunner, loader and driver?
