different presidents

I don't know if this should go in here or the Before 1900s fourm but what would America be like if the candidate that came in second place had actually won in all presidential elections until now (Dewey defeats Truman, Kerry defeats Bush, McCain defeats Obama) Except George Washington of course.:D

a lot of one term presidents:rolleyes:

Well, starting with Truman/Dewey: Dewey wins, Hubert Humphrey or J. William Fullbright defeats him in 1952.

1964: Nixon Vs. LBJ; LBJ narrowly wins.

1972: Hubert Humphrey Vs. John Connally (who joins the Republican Party earlier), Connally wins.

1980: Gerald Ford was ineligible to run for reelection, so the contest would be between Reagan and Ted Kennedy.

1992: Michael Dukakis vs. Howard Baker. Baker wins.

1996: Dan Quayle vs. Al Gore. Gore wins.

2004: Gore vs. Frank Keating. Keating wins.

2008: Kerry vs. John McCain. Kerry wins.

12 years of J.Q. Adams (though he "won" the 1824 election thanks to Congress, he did come in 2nd in both the popular and electoral college votes)
8 years of Henry Clay (non consecutive)
12 years of William J. Bryan :eek:
25 years of Eugene V. Debs :eek::eek:

I believe the OP wishes us to consider each election individually (1964- Goldwater defeats LBJ, 1968- Humphrey defeats Nixon & Wallace, 1972- McGovern defeats Nixon, 1976- Ford defeats Carter, and so on) and w/o regard to how any given election would impact the field of candidates in subsequent elections.
