Yeltsin was the first non communist leader of Russia but he was a drunk who brought large corruption. Could any other politician have stepped up and have done a better job at bringing a western system to Russia? Also, could there have been different and better leaders in other Soviet republics? What effects could they have had and would they have been better or worse than in OTL.
Wew.
Oddly enough, the 1990s in Lithuania are a field I am somewhat weak in, for a number of reasons. It's really god damn chaotic, with parties forming, dissolving, merging and changing almost every day, an economic situation we miraculously managed to turn around in just a few years, and also that it's really damn recent, so most of the intricacies of the period are still under sealed lips.
So I can't give you like a list of people who could have had bigger careers in post-Soviet Lithuania. Admittedly, though, the period was so chaotic that pretty much anyone could become the PM at that time.
It would be interesting to think about an alternate 1993 presidential election, though. Stasys Lozoraitis would admittedly be a far better President than Brazauskas, even if it might not change the overall course of events.
