WI: After German reunification the new states of Germany developed a distinct party system from the West?
From the parties that contested the only free elections in East Germany in 1990 there are several possibilities.
The CDU and SED in East Germany would almost certainly have still merged with those existing parties in West Germany following reunification, and the PDS almost functioned as a purely new states party anyway.
Might the CDU allowed their Alliance for Germany partner during die Wende, the German Social Union, to contest elections in Saxony without opposition to them akin to the existing CDU/CSU arrangement in Bavaria?
Might the Liberal coalition of former bloc parties, the Association of Free Democrats, not merged with the West German Free Democratic Party?
If the East German Green Party and the Independent Women's Associations had been able to agree allocation of their 8 seats in the Volkskammer would this have avoided the former's merger with Alliance '90? Could Alliance '90 have continued to contest elections on their own, and might the Independent Women's Association have still existed as part of the all-German Green Party?
Finally, could the Democratic Farmers' Party of Germany carved a niche for itself as an ecological agrarian party like the Nordic agrarian parties to their north?
