The OTL second phase (November 41) of Typhoon was over ambitious with a proposed encirclement of Moscow including second panzer army which was well far away from Moscow still south of Tula. Weather and supply issues should have made this obvious even against weak Soviet resistance.
It would have probably been better in hindsight to sit after the October gains to prepare defensive lines and build up supply defending against Soviet counter attacks for the Winter.
However for all the Germans knew the Soviets were close to tipping and a complete collapse was close so sitting isn't a realistic option with the General Staff pushing for a continued offensive and Hitler willing to take risks.
So what if the Germans instead of the large encircling move OTL, just launched 4th panzer army right up the middle up the Moscow-Minsk and Moscow-Warsaw highways (leaving 2nd Panzer army on the defensive). If the Soviets really are done the Germans break the Soviet thin line and roll into Moscow up the good highways, if they are not, and the attack bogs down the Germans can stop the attack after a few days whenever they want, at least communications is decent with the two highways and the aren't over extended and exposed difficult to supply salients like the Kiln bulge.
If the Germans are partially successful, but can't take Moscow, they can take the Vnukovo airport (a new good airport with concrete surfaces), and maybe get close enough to stick the city under artillery fire.
