Different Fall of Rome

I always found these "Rome survives" AH scenarios, where Rome survives to modern day and such, to be highly unrealistic and cliche.

I wondered if there was some way that the Roman Empire could slowly shrink, with successor states breaking off, until the Empire controls only Italy and maybe Illyria. Then, the Roman Empire finally falls, and some successor state takes over.

Any ideas?

Let the Ostrogoths defeat the Huns, and we would see much smaller scale Germanic invasions, of course the overruning of several Roman provinces, but with more Germanics staying home we would likely see a Westen Empire survive with both Italy and Africa and if they're lucky Iberia. if they also lose Africa, the Empire is a goner, Italy is simpy to easy to invade for the armies of that time.

Well, Byzantium as in the Eastern Empire could be seen to be fulfilling your requirement quite nicely :)

The problem with the rest is the ratio of Romans to natives, or to invaders, making it very difficult not to end up under barbar rule - eg even where you see the elites adapting to, and adapting the invaders, the coming together usually results in a fusion that is distinctly barbar at top level. Even where this worked well, as with the Visigoths in Spain, they remain vulnerable to the next lot of outsiders who come along

But Visigothic Spain surviving would certainly be something of a start
