In another thread, Susano and I stumbled upon the idea that in both the Netherlands and Germany, there where Williams who were somewhat unfit to become king/emperor. Ofcourse, because the names are the same in English, I'll use the Dutch and German names instead. They might still be similar, but at least they'll be different.
I don't know quite enough about Wilhelm, but OTL Willem III wanted to relinquish his rights to the throne because he didn't agree with the constitutional reform of 1848. His request, in the form of a letter, was declined by his father, Willem II. Now , I propose that Willem II in fact grants him this request, and either Hendrik or Alexander becomes crown prince instead. They both died childless (in 1879 and 1848, respectively), but that could be changed.
Someone else could handle the German part, which could even be butterflied away.
(The terminology is awful here. All sons of Willem II had Willem as their official first name; two of them were both named Willem Alexander. Add the Germans to this, and this becomes really confusing without resorting to spreadsheets)
