In OTL the cold war is seen as a conflict between the capitalist West and the communist East. It began when Stalin's Soviet Union began to dominate Eastern Europe and threaten Western Europe.
However, I suggest that the "communist" bit was a red herring for the west. If America saw the conflict as being between the tyranny and opression of the Soviets against freedom and justice in the West they may have done things differently with better results.
For Example, US dollars could have brought Cuba after Castro siezed power, butterflying away Bay of Pigs and the missile crisis.
Vietnam would have been handled very differently if both sides had been seen as equally bad for US ideals.
US influence in Latin America may well have resulted in fewer dictators and more democracies.
Does anyone have any ideas of how this different perception could have come about, or what the consequences may have been?
