Different Austria Post-WWI

Specifically assume that Slovenia chooses to remain in association with Austria but no other real changes. Even Fiume is grabbed by Italy after an abortive time as a 'free city'.

With the addition of Slovenia and particularly Slovenia's access to the Adriatic what might this do to Europe in the 1930s? I assume that the WWI Austro-Hungarian fleet is still seized by the Allies but something new might have been built.

Might an Austria with added wealth and population carry through the arms buildup considered in the 1930s, perhaps deterring Hitler from simply waltzing in or, more likely, could the arms purchases lead to some kind of association with either Czechoslovakia or Italy?

I am ignorant of Austro-Slovene relations, but I can tell you that in the scenario you describe, Austrovenia has no sea acces. That which it has now is all on Italian territory, and without that territory italy is in no position to go grabbing Fiume.

I also rather doubt that the wishes of the Slovene people, whatever and however Austrophilic they might have been, would have had much currency in Belgrad, 1920.

"With the addition of Slovenia and particularly Slovenia's access to the Adriatic"

Slovenia was a part of Yugoslavia after ww1. Even if it was an independent country and for argument's sake, had the same borders it did today, it would not have access to the ocean.

Slovenia's Western provinces were under Italian control. Italy at that time annexed the Austrian Littoral provinces known as Kunstenland or the Istrian Penninsula, completely cutting off Slovenia from Adriatic access. Even if Italy did not have Fiume, this was apart of Croatia and not Slovenia.

For this to work Britain and France would have to stand up to Italy and limit its landgrab. While this maybe difficult it was not impossible. Kaiser Karl I did have his supporters in France and Great Britain ( in Great Britain King George V was one of them) so there is the possibility that the two major allies would have deceided that neither Italy nor the new Yugoslavian state would get the territory in question.

That would make Austria only more unstable. The German Austrians would still want Anschluss, and the Sloveens would still say they havent yet gained freedom and look towards Yugoslavia...

I'm not so sure about that. If the allies are willing to allow Austria to keep more of the empire then Karl's chances of successfully holding the throne increases. The Emperor was very popular in Slovenia and even Austria. If he didn't loses all of the Imperial territory then perhaps it might work. It needs to be noted that there was a considerable monarchist movement in Austria and only the lose of all of the Imperial lands tilted the balance in favor of the socialist who wanted to unite with Germany. They thought that unifications with a Social Democratis controled government would ensure a socilaist agenda.

I think you got it chronologically backwards. The Republic of German Austra was declared way baefore teh Parisian treaties, after all. And a Habsburg return, I think many states would intervene to prveent that.

The German Austrian republic was only declared do to the Italians resuming hostilities when the Austro-Hungarian Military thought that a truce had gone into effect. If this had not happen Karl would have had the borders fully in his control and the Imperial government would have not collapsed. Thus there would have been on Republic.
