... against Andrew II of Hungary in 1225 ? In other words, could the Order keep Burzenland ?
In stead of asking to placed under the Papal Sea, they could either keep under the authority of Andrew II, but that is ofcourse the easy solution.
Other options: Ask the Pope in total secrecy, and make sure Andrew II do not know about it, until the Pope has recognized it, and threathens Andrew II with excommunication, should he try to get it back.....or support/ take part in an uprising against Andrew II, in order to have complete autonomy of Burzenland, should the uprising succeed.
The first solution doesn't interest me. I'm looking for an independent Teutonic state. The second option is plausible as Hermann von Salza was a good friend of the Pope. But what I'm asking is if they stand a chance defeating the Hungarians on their own ... maybe when Andrew II is crusading.
Also thanks for your reply !
While Andrew was crusading, the state of Hungary detoriated. When he returned, he became unpopular, because of the higher taxes he imposed due to the financial cost of the crusade among others. There the Order could support someone from his family in a coup, in the exchange of an independent Order State. It is important that the order do not try to go at it alone....They would need som support, from Hungarian nobility...preferably within the royal family.
Unfortunately, the Order was not very popular among Hungarian nobility either. But who knows, maybe even Bela IV, who even had clashes with the Order while his father Andrew was crusading, could be more favourable towards the Teutons this time.
Another question : if the Teutons are still present in Transylvania and Konrad of Mazovia asks them to come in Prussia, what would they choose ? Was Prussia more of a backup plan for the Order since they've lost Burzenland or even if they still had it they would still go and crusade in Prussia ?
