Did A-bombs prevent communism in Japan?

Did atomic bombs (dropped on Nagasaki and Horoshima) pre-empt a Soviet invasion of the Japanese home islands during the autumn of 1945?

An entirely communist Japan? No. A communist Hokkaido? Maybe. It deether the Japanese would have surrendered before the Soviets were able to mount the operation anyways. The initial plans were for a landing in September, but a delay into October or maybe even later so the Soviets can finish mopping up the Kuriles and the Asian mainland seems probable.

were would they get the amphibious shipping? And could they sustain hundreds of thousands of fresh casualties? The soviet economy was in ruins, they had to demobilize as fast as it could. Remember they had to have the post war recovery, the country was weary almost to death and any continuing losses in China and Japan may have caused widespread revolt.

NO

The Japanese surrender was caused by the fact that their battle strategy revolved around focusing defensive efforts against the US to bring them to the negotiation table. Once the USSR declared war and invaded, all options to resist the Americans and use the Soviets as neutral ground went up in smoke, resulting in the war ending soon afterwards.

The nuclear weapons had very little influence on the matter of the timing of the Japanese surrender, therefore, unless the Soviets were able to invaded Japan proper in a matter of days after their declaration of war, a communist state being carved out of Japan is out of the question.

were would they get the amphibious shipping?

Same place they got it for the landings in Korea, Sakhalin, and the Kuriles: lend-lease from the United States.

And could they sustain hundreds of thousands of fresh casualties?

Taking Hokkaido would take one hundred thousand lives as a maximum. And the Red Army as a whole is 12.5 million men, with still several million more that could be conscripted from the civilian sectors. Hundreds of thousands of losses is a drop in the bucket.

No, what prevented communism in Japan was that the Soviets weren't given an occupation zone in the Japanese islands.
