The Plantagenets in Germany part I Elizabeth of Sicily was born in Wolfstein, Bavaria, to Conrad IV of Germany and Elisabeth of Wittelsbach on March 30, 1252, she became a very eligible heiress when her father, Conrad IV died, unfortunately for Elisabeth, the throne of Sicily was usurped by Manfred on 1258 and eve, her illegitimate half-uncle wants to marry her with dispensation, she later left the side of her ambitious uncle on 1267 and she married Edmund of Germany, the son of Richard of Cornwall, King of Germany on 1268, she knew that the marriage would be her uncle’s weakness, Edmund of Germany was forced to conquer Sicily and many troops from Germany and England were raised in order to get back the rightful inheritance of Elisabeth, Manfred of Sicily unfortunately lost the battle with the English and the Germans and was exiled to Constantinople and later his descendants except for the descendants of Constance of Sicily, the Queen of Aragon disappear from the records due to them being impoverished and remain in Constantinople. Elisabeth of Sicily and Edmund of Sicily were crowned as King and Queen of Sicily on 1269, however, on 1270, the next year the father of Edmund of Sicily, Richard, the King of Germany died and because that who will be the new ruler Holy Roman Empire is disputed and Rudolf of Habsburg wants to claim the Holy Roman Empire’s throne, Edmund of Sicily supported Premysl Ottokar against Rudolf of Habsburg and supported his rights to Austria, Edmund of Sicily went to war against Rudolf of Habsburg during the war Rudolf of Habsburg said to Edmund of Sicily that he will be the King of Germany not Edmund or Premysl and the two were agitated of the insensitive remarks of Rudolf of Habsburg and their armies combined and attacked the Troops of Rudolf of Habsburg. The troops of Rudolf of Habsburg were finally defeated by the forces of Edmund of Sicily and Premysl Ottokar of Bohemia, afterwards, Edmund of Sicily was made the Holy Roman Emperor and Duke of Swabia on October 1270 and he and Premysl Ottokar became allies after they defeated Rudolf of Habsburg, he wore the crown and he found the crown very fitting to him and carried his throne back to Sicily, but he went to many stop overs before he went back to his wife in Sicily. When he returned from war on 1271, he found his wife, Elisabeth of Sicily with a son named Alfonso who was born on June 4, 1270, he never knew about the birth of his own son, Alfonso the Duke of Calabria, he was surprised of about the existence of his son, he asked.
“Is this child mine”
And Elisabeth of Sicily said “Yes, he is your son; I never knew that I was pregnant when you gone away to the war, I just knew I was pregnant a few months after you left.”
Edmund responded to Elisabeth of Sicily “I am surprised.”
Elisabeth of Sicily said “Our son will be a great king!” “I am happy that we now have a heir to our thrones, I wish that he will love long and I hope that we will be able to raise him properly as a ruler of our Kingdoms”
Edmund the Holy Roman Emperor was very happy about the news of the birth of a son, now his line would be established in the Holy Roman Empire and he looks forward about the future of his own kin on the German throne, he later carried his child with Elisabeth whom he never seen his own birth.
Edmund, the Holy Roman Emperor smiled and assured his wife Elisabeth that he will be there for her when she needs him, she revealed that she is pregnant again a few months after Edmund returned and he said that he would be happy about the pregnancy and finally, Elisabeth gives birth to a daughter named Eleanor in March 1272 who at birth was betrothed to Wenceslaus of Bohemia. Edmund and Elisabeth were pleased at the birth of a son; however Philip III, the King of France is worried about the existence of a Plantagenet Emperor on the Holy Roman Empire which might be a threat to him and his own Kingdom and the Plantagenet House are still holding parts of France at this time, however the King of France has other things to worry about rather than the Plantagenets propagating their kin on Germany and Italy, Philip III will try to ally with the Habsburgs who were defeated by the alliance of the Premyslids and the Plantagenets time to time.
