Destruction of the Pyramids/Sphinx?

The 21st century saw the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan by a fundamentalist Islamic regime. Is there any way that we can get the Pyramids destroyed in Egypt under a similar reasoning? For example, is the Sphinx any less an idol than the Buddhas?

Also, what similar events occured in OTL? The ones that spring to mind are the Destruction of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, the destruction of the Cathedrals in Paris (what the Hunchback of Notre Dame was written to try to stop) and maybe some of the Greek temple statues...

One of the Pyramids actually was destroyed by the Romans, the Pyramid of Jedefre I think, it just took lots of effort and hundreds of years. Frankly that is what destroying one of the Pyramids takes, well that or a Nuke, the things are just too massive for anything else to work. The Sphinx was damaged by a fundamentalist OTL so a greater destruction is certainly plausible.

I thought it was damaged in some war. Got a source for that?

No one really knows. The Egyptian Arab historian al-Maqrizi attributes the loss of it to a Sufi Muslim by the name of it Muhammed Sa'im al-Dahr who found that the Egyptian peasants made offerings to it in return for bountiful harvests and hacked it off. He was then executed for vandalism.

Another story claims it was broken off by a cannonball fired by Napoleon's army when they invaded Egypt. There are various interpetations which indict the British, the Mamluks and others. But it was already lacking a nose during the 1750s, way before Napoleon so yeah. :p
