Desaster in Berlin in 1989?

First of all, most of you must be thinking, "What is the desaster of '89?", well, during the demise of the Eastern germany, Chairmen Honecker considered sending the nationale volksarmee to slaughter the eastern german protesters during the fall of the berlin wall, just like in Tianmen square (or worse considering Honecker's nature) if he did that, what would have happened?

Well, if Honecker did that a couple of things. I'm not sure the army would have done it. Per OTL they did not respond at all to things going on around the DDR that spring or summer. By 89 the writing on the wall (no pun intended.)

If Gorbachev did not approve, and he did not then I suspect the KGB who was watching the Stasi would have arrested him. Putin was in the DDR at the time as a junior officer.

I suppose the SU could have their army could stage a coup. If by some chance it spread to the WAllies sectors could be interesting. But, I doubt to much would happen considering Bush and Thatcher were too competent for something out of hand.
