I'm currently watching a documentary about Stalin and in it there is a fair bit of criticism in one part of Stalin's inner circle for not deposing him when he panicked after the Battle of Minsk and retreated to his Dacha, apparently expecting to be purged; instead his team coaxed him out to take command of the war effort. What if though they weren't as cowed and thought they could do better and purged him, taking over as a council to run the war? Would the military get behind them after Stalin was removed for his failures? Could a team work together or would there be a power struggle and purges once Stalin was out of the way? If they could hold things together, would Stalin's staff (guys like Beria and Molotov) have been more effective leaders than Stalin?
